A civilized weekend in Kannur

Getting settled into Mumbai, waiting for out third traveller to arrive at the "hotel" and reviewing posts... Just realized I had a couple posts lurking as drafts that had not been published!! Amending my mistake now!

Friday 19 July- Sunday 21 July

After the first weekend of insane busses and travel to Wayanad, a few of us decided to take it easy for our second weekend andhead to Kannur and chill out, relax, and splurge on on air conditioning, hot water and wifi.

Four of us grabbed a bus from Parassini and headed down to Kannur to check into a hotel on Friday night. Being able to sleep in a real bed with air conditioning was sooooo nice!!

Friday night was pretty low key.. I think we got to the hotel around 9:15, hung out for a little and then passed out watching Bollywood movies.

Saturday am I was ecstatic to discover we had a pretty descent view of the Arabian ocean :)

Three of the four of us wanted to explore a bit so we hit up breakfast early and by 8:30 we were walking north and looking for the beach.

Kannur was called Cannanore when India was controlled by the British, and it seems like they had a large naval presence here as well. From our walk it looks like the Indian navy has settled in where the British left.  There were a lot of military type gentlemen in uniforms looking overly serious so I didn't take many pictures of the buiildings.. but there was still a lot to take in along the walk.

It's still really odd to me to see cows chilling in the streets...

There were a lot of monuments and trees in remembrence of fallen Indian soldiers around several of the official, military looking buildings.

We were staying right on Baby Beach and walked along the coat up to Payyambalam Beach.

It was early enough that we encountered a bunch of local girls hanging out before school started.  Everyone in Kannur, from the schoolgirls to the military guards were really kind, smiley, and asked us all where we were from with a genuine curiosity that was very warm.

After meandering our way for about a half hour, we finally made it to the beach... very, very soft black and brown sand, cold water, and fresh air.  All in all, a very good start to the morning and the weekend.

After walking about on the beach we went off to find some Hindi temples and whatever else we could in town...
